Nintendo will launch a new version of its Wii Fit
Nintendo plans to launch this fall a new version of its sports accessory Wii Fit to boost sales of its video game console Wii, reported on Sunday May 31 Japanese business daily Nikkei. According to Nikkei, the manufacturer would prepare Wii Fit Plus, more accurate and capable of network play.
The “Wii Fit Plus” will allow users to compete on the Internet to other participants seeking to lose weight and in the various exercises suggested by the enhancement, the newspaper says without citing its sources. It is also more precise than the previous model.
Wii Fit, which connects to the Wii console, is composed of a plate-shaped scales and sensors capable of determining the position of the player. According to the Nikkei, the Japanese publisher and manufacturer of consoles will also launch a new version of its flagship title, Mario, in the second half of 2009. A spokesperson for Nintendo declined to comment.
Nintendo has been relatively resilient to the global recession with its Wii, which competes with the Xbox 360, Microsoft, and PlayStation 3 from Sony. But sales of the console with a joystick movement detection has slowed in recent months due to the lack of new titles.
Analysts and observers expect that the Japanese group unveiled at E3 in Los Angeles, which starts tomorrow, Tuesday June 2, new titles.
The “Wii Fit” game features a shoulder-width “balance board” that senses shifts in posture. It can be used to monitor weight and for a variety of games and exercises.
“Wii Fit plus” will be more precise in its measurements, allowing for more accurate monitoring of one’s health, the Nikkei said.
